Storey challenge over Rasharkin parade

NORTH Antrim DUP MLA Mervyn Storey has called for an investigation into a band parade in Rasharkin on Sunday.

Stating that he wanted to ensure there were no double standards either on the part of the police, Parades Commission or political representatives Mervyn Storey said: "I understand that an 11/1 was only submitted on the preceding Thursday by Rosnashane AOH band, despite claims that this had been done as far back as February."

"There is a very real onus upon the Parades Commission to demonstrate that there are not two separate systems in operation – one whereby the Loyal Orders are rigorously overseen and another that allows republicans to do virtually what they want whenever they want."

"It is very simple – if there is to be a standard of behaviour and a code of conduct, and if we are to require that certain principles are to be adhered to by people on parade then that must apply across the board. "The simple test now is for republican political representatives to come out and demonstrate that there will be no double standards on this matter."

A spokesperson for the Parades Commission said Rosnashane band had stated that an application had been made sometime ago and that he had no reason to disbelieve them.

However, the spokesperson added that somewhere along the line the application had been delayed and that the band re-submitted one.

"Although this was late Commissioners considered the application and allowed the parade to take place. "Rosnashane would say this was the second time they submitted an application, he said."

The spokesperson said they had had the parade monitored and their indications were that it was "fairly family friendly."

Sinn Fein MLA, Daithi McKay, said in response to Mr. Storey's statement:

"Obviously we are starting another marching season in the North Antrim area and there is an onus on all sides to try and ensure that contentions are not raised so early.

"The only way to resolve issues surrounding band parades is through direct dialogue and if Meryn Storey has an issue with any parade then he should contact directly those involved in the organisation of the parade or the local political representative to try and progress things.

"Certainly, the way to increase tension in the community is by using inflammatory language and running to the media. I don't this this is being very helpful at all."

A PSNI spokesman said police had a responsibility to police a Pardes Commission determination and any such parade or protest would be policed appropriately.
