Storey in Warm Homes call

DUP MLA Mervyn Storey has called on the Department for Social Development to review the eligibility criteria for the Warm Homes Scheme.

Speaking after it emerged that the scheme is not meeting all of its spending and intervention targets Mervyn Storey said: “The Warm Homes Scheme is about helping to improve the fuel and energy efficiency of the homes of some of the most vulnerable people in Northern Ireland.”

“Over 70,000 homes have benefited from the Warm Homes Scheme since 2001. It has proven to be an effective tool in combating fuel poverty. ”

“This year the likelihood is that the scheme will not expend all of its budget and as a consequence will not meet its targets for heating installations.”

“DSD should amend the criteria for the Warm Homes Scheme so that assistance can get to those who need it.”

“It cannot be right that homes with broken or wasteful heating systems cannot take advantage of the Warm Homes Scheme when evidently the funds are there to help out.”
