Storey welcomes further funds to address town’s dereliction

North Antrim DUP MLA Mervyn Storey has welcomed a £100,000 of funding from the DOE to enhance the environment, deal with dereliction and boost tourism and local trade in Ballymoney.

The additional money was confirmed by the Finance Minister Sammy Wilson in the Assembly two weeks ago as part of the June Monitoring round.

The DOE Minister had made a bid for £1.5 million.

Commenting Mervyn Storey said: “Any additional funding for Ballymoney is to be welcomed.

“The announcement of £100,000 from DOE comes on the back of the money from DSD that has been put to good effect in addressing areas such as Linenhall Street.

“At the time when money was given to Portrush and Portstewart before last year’s Irish Open and when Londonderry benefitted from a significant improvement in advance of the UK City of Culture I 
was calling for the Environment Minister not to over 
look towns such as Ballymoney.

“I am glad that Minister Atwood has recognised the need in Ballymoney and this additional funding comes at a good time to assist the Council in bringing forward the 
recently launched Master Plan.

“There remains many challenges for our town centres, however investment like this is helpful and does demonstrate a commitment by the Assembly to address local needs.

“Fifteen councils are to share £1.5m from the Department of Environment (DoE).
