Ryan McFarland was among a number of Carrickfergus College pupils who entered a competition to write a verse to be used in the Assembly’s official Christmas card this year.

There were 1600 entries and out of these, five finalists were selected including Ryan a year 10 pupil. Along with his parents and English teacher Mrs Abel, Ryan attended a reception at Stormont, where he received a certificate and read out his poem (below) to the audience in the Great Hall.

‘A Christmas Poem’

At this special time of year

Thinking of those that we hold dear

Family and friends reunite

Full of happiness and delight

Children eagerly waiting for Santa’s sleigh

Soon to land on Christmas day

Mistletoe and Christmas holly

Feel the atmosphere, it’s so jolly

So, as the Christmas bells do chime

We wish for you a happy and peaceful Christmas time.
