St.Patrick's and St.Brigid's pupils have 1Goal!

AS football fever started worldwide St.Patrick's and St.Brigid's P.S. in Ballycastle went football crazy for a good cause.

The 1Goal campaign is linked to the sendmyfriendtoschool organisation which the school has been supporting for many years. This year every child from nursery to P7 has designed a football scarf and participated in a football match to bring attention to the estimated 70million children worldwide who do not have access to an education. All the scarves will be collected to be sent to David Cameron showing him the depth of support for this issue.

The children also eagerly await 24th June when for the first time the boys and girls will be educated on the one site in their purpose built new school. To help the children settle to new playground routines the school has introduced two initiatives. Primary 5 children have applied for and been selected as playground buddies. They have been trained in co-operative games and will lead play for P1 and P2 children at dinnertimes ensuring happy and fun playgrounds. In Key Stage 2 the P6 children spent a term going through an intensive training programme to be prepared as playground mentors. They are now equipped to settle minor disputes in the playground using routines developed by the NEELB and supported by the DENI.

All these ideas have initially been proposed and discussed by the active school council who have just completed their elections at the start of May. During the past year the council have suggested ideas for the Christmas fete and Sports Day, contributed to the school's anti-bullying policy and contacted Moyle Council about local amenities. They also took the lead during the visit to the school of the Sri Lankan delegates from the Connecting Classrooms project interviewing the delegates and giving them a guided tour prior to the concert presentation. The School Council hope to be equally pro-active next year and help with the settling in process to the state of the art school building.
