Strabane is fly-tipping capital

STRABANE is the fly-tipping capital of Northern Ireland with 827 incidences recorded in the district last year - over twice as many as the next worst area Newtonabbey (427 fly tips).

According to Environment Minsiter Alex Attwood six councils in Northern Ireland currently record incidents of fly-tipping via Flycapture, a web based fly-tipping database which is managed by the Environment Agency and provided to all Councils in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The figures for 2010/11 show there were 867 incidences in Strabane; 427 in Newtonabbey; 201 in Larne; 159 in Ballymena; 122 in Armagh; and 39 in Banbridge.

The Minister stated: “The NIEA does not collect the figures for the other 20 Councils in Northern Ireland.

“NIEA is currently in negotiations with councils on the subject of fly-tipping as a result of The Waste and Contaminated Land (Amendment) Act (Northern Ireland) 2011 and is endeavouring to encourage all councils in Northern Ireland to record information on fly-tipping on the flycapture database.”
