Strabane schools set to unite in 2014

Education Minister, John O’Dowd, has approved a development proposal to amalgamate St Anne’s Primary School and Barrack Street Boys’ Primary School in Strabane.

Explaining the reasons for his decision, the Minister said that the amalgamation “will create a co-educational primary school serving the Camus area of Strabane”.

He added: The amalgamation will meet parental demand and ensure a broad, balanced curriculum in a viable and sustainable school. This proposal is considered to be the best solution for securing high quality education now and into the future.”

On 1 August 2013 the Western Education and Library Board (WELB) proposed that the schools amalgamate to form a co-educational primary school with effect from 1 September 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter. The existing girls’ school will house Key Stage One pupils with Key Stage Two pupils and pupils in the nursery unit housed on the existing boys’ school site.
