Straidbilly pupils flying high

P6 and P7 students from Straidbilly Primary School recently took part in a kite design workshop to learn more about Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM).

The students learnt about the history of kite flying; how a kite flies; physics of kites; forces of nature; assembly of the kite; designing their own bespoke personal kite; kite safety; and of course how to actually fly the kite!

Mrs Gillian McConnell, Principal, Straidbilly Primary School, said: “We are very fortunate to have been able to avail of this opportunity with Go Fly Your Kite! The pupils were fascinated to learn about the science behind wind power and kite flying and had a wonderful time designing and flying their own kites!

“They have taken a keen interest in the Cloonty Windfarm near our school and many have been inspired by the potential of renewable energy in our locality and what it can mean for their futures.

“I think we have a few engineers in the making! We would like to thank both Go Fly Your Kite and Gaelectric for the experience our pupils are receiving.”

The workshop was hosted by County Down based “Go Fly Your Kite” (www.goflyyourkite.com ) and sponsored by Gaelectric, the renewable energy and energy storage group.

Gaelectric recently officially opened its £13.4million wind farm at Cloonty.

The 9.2MW wind farm is located between Derrykeighan and Bushmills.
