Strange bird is seen in sixth form centre

STUDENTS in Foyle and Londonderry College's sixth form centre were amazed when a beautifully coloured bird landed on the window sill and gazed in at them recently.

The students, believing it was someone's escaped pet rather than a wild bird, tried to open the window to let the bird in, but were unable to get it inside.

A spokeswoman for the RSPB has identified the bird, saying: "This rather stunning looking bird is a male Eastern Rosella. Native to Australia, this bird has most likely escaped from someone's cage or aviary." The website animal-world.com says of this type of bird: Though they are not great talkers they can be quite vocal. They are also very hardy, very resistant to disease, and are not difficult to feed and care for. Once they are established with an acceptable mate, they are easy to breed. All the Rosellas, including the Golden-mantled Rosella or Cecilia's Rosella are very energetic. They are a more difficult bird to tame, requiring a lot of consistent firm training and close interaction. For this reason, they are not really considered to be a beginners bird."
