Street Kidz success at Whitehead Presbyterian

The ‘Street Kidz’ initiative at Whitehead Presbyterian Church served up a range of family-orientated activities over the course of a weekend.

It all kicked-off with a barbecue on the first evening, continued the following day with a range of games and clubs under the theme ‘What’s your thing’ and concluded on the Sunday with a service.

Reflecting on the programme earlier this month, Rev Ian Carton, minister of Whitehead Presbyterian Church, told the Carrick Times: “It went superbly well, we had a very enthusiastic response.

“A number of kids were keen to see it every week. We will look to do something as often as we can.”

The minister indicated he was pleasantly surprised over the course of the weekend by the young people and their enthusiasm for new events.

“The bake-off was incredibly well supported. Lots of boys wanted to bake, more than for football.”

Dr Sally’s Science Club, run by Sally Picton, also drew the numbers, he added, as did a DIY coffee shop.

“There were dads who came along and enjoyed sitting up in our Street Cafe and drinking coffee.”

Rev Carton entered into the spirit of the occasion too by agreeing to be the target for ‘soak the pastor’, which raised some money for cancer research.

He also welcomed the generosity of spirit shown by those attending.

“We had all these little prizes. One of the games was being played by two-three boys. It ran out of prizes. They gave back their prizes so others could enjoy.”

‘Church for all’ was the theme on day three of Street Kidz with the children sharing their experiences before the programme concluded with a cuppa and chat.
