Street naming policy to ensure a local flavour in new housing estates

TWO separate developers will ask Derry City Council's Environmental Services Committee to allow them christen new housing estates in Eglinton and Prehen "Oak Tree Manor" and "Prehen Woods" respectively.

The distinctly local flavour of the names stems from the developers' need to comply with the local authority's policy on Street Naming and Postal Numbering, which encourages deference to local landmarks and traditions.

The Kevin Watson Group has consulted with local primary schools in Eglinton about the name of an apartment block being completed at Coolafinney Road in the village.

A school competition to decide on an appropriate name settled on "Oak Tree Manor" as the first preference and "Oak Tree Apartments" as the second preference "reflecting the mature oak trees around the development and also that it is sited opposite the well known Eglinton Manor House."

Meanwhile on the far side of Londonderry developer James McDaid wants to call four new dwellings being constructed at Prehen Park "Prehen Woods."

A report by the Derry City Council Chief Executive to tomorrow's monthly Environmental Services Committee will seek approval for the new street names with a local flavour.

"The first preference 'Oak Tree Manor' is in compliance with Council's Street Naming and Property Numbering Policy as it commemorates and retains local landmarks," the report states.

Equally: "The Developer's preference 'Prehen Woods' is in compliance with Council's Policy on Street Naming and Postal Numbering as it commemorates a local landmark."
