Streets ahead - Broughshane takes another title

The village’s Main Street has been named a regional winner of ‘Cultivation Street’, a nationwide competition run by David Domoney and The Sunday People, supported by the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA)

Main Street was named as Northern Ireland’s best in the nationwide gardening competition. Broughshane’s community development activities started as a result of the civil unrest in 1969. Residents of Main Street were motivated to create new opportunities for their children to grow up in a more positive and caring environment.

A community garden project in started in 1987and for the past 26 years it has brought the village together. Since then the village has also doubled in size and 70% of the population are involved in community and voluntary activities.

Broughshane’s Sandy Wilson said: “Our community work is now involving a third generation and as a result of focussing on caring for the environment, we have learnt to care more about each other. ‘People, Plants and Pride = growing together’ is our motto. We are delighted to have been named Northern Ireland’s Best Street.”

=The competition consisted of a number regional heats and categories with a prize of £500 worth of National Garden Gift Vouchers for each of the regional winners.

The judging took place on Thursday 5th September at Trinity House in London with a number of esteemed judges who include Carol Paris and David Butler of the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), James Scott – Editor of The Sunday People, Michael Romero - Prince’s Foundation, Leigh Morris - President Institute of Horticulture, Jane Ennis - Editor of Reveal Magazine and TV gardener David Domoney.
