Streets sealed off as police probe serious assault

ALL of Castle Street as well as Clare Street in Ballycastle were sealed off on Sunday evening while police investigated a serious assault.

A man, thought to be in his early 30's, was said to have been bottled outside licensed premises and sustained cuts to his face and throat.

Dozens of tourists as well as locals were alerted to the incident when police used vehicles to seal off the two streets while officers carried out an investigation.

One man has been arrested and is helping police with enquiries.

Speaking on Sunday evening, local Councillor Cara McShane said there was no place for this type of incident in a town which was trying to maintain a positive image.

Councillor Seamus Blaney said he did not wish to make a detailed comment since a man was helping with enquiries, but he said the image of a number of police vehicles blocking off streets was not a good one for the town.

"I'm not blaming the police for this; they have a job of work to do, but Sunday was a beautiful day and the number of visitors would have been high.

"This sort of incident only taints our town at a time when the Chamber of Commerce and the Council as well as business people are doing their best to attract visitors," Councillor Blaney said.
