Strong ties between Broughshane WI and YFCU

BROUGHSHANE Women’s Institute welcomed Thoburn McCaughey, Past-President of the Young Farmer’s Clubs of Ulster, and his wife Claire, to their January meeting.

Thoburn gave a fascinating talk on his experiences as a member of the YFCU and how he progressed through the organisation to the prestigious post of president.

He told WI members of his travels, responsibilities and the diverse range of people he met including the Duchess of Cambridge and the Queen.

WI Members agreed the YFCU plays an important role in supporting and developing the rural community and there are strong ties between both organisations.

This was evident in the large number of WI members at the meeting who were past members of the YFCU. Sandra Adams proposed a vote of thanks to Thoburn and Claire for giving up their time to attend.

President of Broughshane WI, Eileen Moll, presented Brownie Esler and Sheila King with their honour membership and thanked both ladies for all their hard work and support for the Institute over the years.

The competition for the evening was a limerick entitled “The Farmer Wants a Wife” and was won by Elizabeth Patterson with second and third going to Mary Robinson. Following supper the very enjoyable evening was brought to a close.
