Student was disorderly and resisted police

Before North Antrim Magistrates’ court on Friday was Ryan Thomas Fillis (23) of Strand Road.

Court heard that Fillis came to the attention of police on the Bushmills Road in Portrush on May 9 at 2.05am.

An altercation had broken out between Fillis and a group of males.

Police intervened, but Fillis began shouting foul language. He was told to calm down by police and his sister.

When he continued he was arrested for disorderly behaviour.

Police had to use force to restrain the defendant as he was being arrested.

In the custody suite at Coleraine PSNI station, Fillis kicked out at an officer and was re-arrested for resisting police.

A solicitor for Fillis told the court that his client had a clear record up to this incident.

The solicitor said that Fillis had been walking along the road, when the group of males started behaving inappropriately towards his sister. He said: “He should have listened to his sister and calmed down.”

District Judge, Richard Wilson described Fillis’s behaviour as ‘totally inappropriate’.

He said: “You are going off to begin you university career, it is a shame to had to blot your copybook.”

Fillis was fined 150 for disorderly behaviour and 150 for resisting police.
