Students check out the corridors of power

YOUNG women from four local post-primary schools joined the Mayor of Newtownabbey on a trip to London last month to find out about the corridors of power at Westminster.

The young women’s programme ‘Political Awareness - Young Women’s Perspective’ was organised by Newtownabbey Borough Council’s Community Services and Good Relations sections.

The students aged 16-18 years from Ballyclare High, Ballyclare Secondary, Belfast High and Newtownabbey Community High enjoyed several classes and excursions before the Westminster trip.

The programme, which started in January, is aimed at giving the students a better understanding of local, regional and national politics.

Claire Fox, the Council’s Good Relations Officer, commented: “The students have become more confident in dealing with political processes and engaging with political representatives at a local, regional and national level. We hope they have enjoyed coming together with other young women from different traditions and viewpoints to look at issues that are important to them and their peers.”

During their London visit, the students met with First Minister Peter Robinson, former Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, John Reid and local MPs William McCrea and Sammy Wilson.
