Students put their feet up after Euro cycle challenege

THREE local students are looking forward to putting their feet up after getting home following a gruelling 1653 mile cycle trip.

On Wednesday the three former Wallace High students arrived back in Lisburn having completed the journey from Budapest, Hungary to Oxford, in an effort to raise fundsfor Christian Aid.

Jamie Humphries and Graeme Greenfield (both at Oxford University) along with Robbie McFaul (at Durham University) were joined by their friend Dan Sheppard from Gilford. All aged 21, they flew to Budapest on Tuesday July 20 and cycled through Hungary, Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Holland and France. They arrived in Oxford last weekend and the journey was meant to end there. But three of the boys decided after a few days break they would cycle to Liverpool get a boat to Belfast and then cycle home along the Lagan Valley towpath.

Speaking from home Jamie described it as an "amazing experience".

One of the highlights, he said, was cycling along the Danube River. "It was spectaular," said Jamie. "I am just glad that it all went well. We only had a couple of punctures along the way which was good and only a couple of scratches between us - no major incidents."

The boys to date have raised 1535 for Christian Aid and are hoping to raise another 100 so they can say they raised a pound for every mile they cycled.
