Students see how to make a career out of entertaining

AS part of their learning experience, a group of Travel and Tourism students from South Eastern Regional College (SERC) recently visited Musical Theatre for Youth (MT4UTY) in Belfast to see for themselves the many and varied career opportunities the industry offers and how the skills they are learning now can be used in practice in the future.

The visit was part of their module ‘Entertainment for Holiday Makers’ which looks at the world of entertainment in a range of tourism contexts.

The day was spent in informative presentations outlining how to plan and design an entertainment programme, gaining knowledge of the essential aspects of a successful entertainment activity, including the skills and qualities needed by entertainers.

Students then had the opportunity to put some of these into practice when planning, preparing, delivering and evaluating an entertainment activity.

Later, the students were treated to a really enjoyable tour of the theatre.

SERC course lecturer Lisa Sinnerton said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for the students to gain an insight into one of Ireland’s best youth musical theatre companies, and to appreciate how much work, time, energy, expertise and of course fun goes into creating a performance.

“All in all, an enjoyable and memorable visit. Feedback from the students was really encouraging, and we are hoping to host more events like this.”
