’Stute got more than other clubs

SPORT NI provided more funding to Institute FC over the past two years than any other IFA Championship club, contributing £727,200 in 2009/10.

Sports Minister Carol Ní Chuilín was asked by DUP MLA Mervyn Storey what assistance her Department provides for football clubs who play in the IFA Championship.

Outlining the expenditure she revealed the £727,200 awarded to Institute as part of the stadia safety programme in2009/10 was the biggest amount awarded to any Championship club.

An award of £232,000 to Ballyclare Comrades FC in the same year was the second largest dole out.

The sports Minister stated: “In the last three financial years, Sport NI has provided £2,487,971 of exchequer funding to association football clubs who play in the IFA Championship.”

She advised that a number of Championship clubs had applied for assistance under Sport NI’s Sport Matters Community Capital Programme and that these applications were assessed and are now on a waiting list for awards.

She added: “In the future, there will be potential for Championship clubs to benefit from sub-regional development funding.

This funding has been endorsed by the Executive as a priority area of spend in the next CSR period (2015). and a Strategic Outline Case is currently being developed having regard to strategic needs.”
