Special guest was BBC One Show’s resident scientist, Dr Marty Jopson who delivered his ‘Record Breaking Science’ show where he discussed the science behind his recent TV world record successes and attempted an ‘unofficial’ world record.

The annual science show celebrates the achievements of young people in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) and showcased a variety of innovative and exciting science projects carried out by students from primary and secondary schools.

The projects covered a range of subjects and the focus was on real world challenges and included the development of an eczema sleep suit to aid eczema sufferers, a development of a farm safety app to promote farm safety and a cellular analysis on the effects of garlic extract on cancer cell

Main winners of the day were Meabh O’Sullivan, and Isabelle O’Sullivan of Loreto Secondary School, Balbriggan, who jointly picked up the Sentinus Young Scientist trophy, while the overall ‘Young Engineer’ title went to Charlie Monaghan of St. Colman’s College, Newry. Charlie’s innovative ‘Eque-Raise’ Show Jumping fence attracted a lot of interest from the judges and visitors to the event.

Charlie addressed the frustrating need for the Show jump rider to dismount to raise or lower the fence top bar whilst practicing in the ménage.

He has used a clever counterweight winding system on each post which enables the top bar to be raised to a precise level and from a comfortable and safe mounted position.

Judges were impressed with the solution the ‘Eque-Raise’ provides to a problem.
