Successful disability meeting held

The Lisburn Access Group held a successful AGM at the Lagan Valley Island Centre recently.

The group which has been fighting for the rights of disabled people in Lisburn for 30 years was in danger of winding up if they couldn’t find new recruits.

However, it was decided that a Steering Group would take over the running of the group, with a three month hand over period agreed.

Local man John Lund was appointed to lead the Steering Group and organisers of the group are now hoping to attract new members and people to lead the group forward.

Mr Lund said: “The Lisburn Access Group is now 30 years old. It is the only one of its kind in Northern Ireland, it cannot be allowed to go.

“The Chairman, Irené Orr, and Vice Chair David Munn, have done sterling work over the years. They will help with the transition period.”

John is hoping to attract those with disability problems, their relatives and carers or anyone who supports those with disabilities to join the group, which intends to hold regular meetings.

“We would like to thank the previous committee,” said John. “We hope to make sure the group grows.”
