Sugden angry about theft of Manannán Mac Lir statue.

MLA for East Londonderry, Claire Sugden has said she is ‘disgusted’ at the theft of the Manannán Mac Lir statue from Binevenagh Mountain.

The MLA said: “Public art is often criticised, but Manannán Mac Lir was entirely appropriate in its setting.

“I recently discovered the statue and was taken away by how much it captured how I felt standing on top of Binevenagh. The views, of course, are remarkable and Manannán Mac Lir framed and celebrated the natural beauty.

“It seems the reason for removing this statue was in God’s name which is shameful and indeed more disrespectful that their reasoning. Certainly I think God would have something to say about those who stole something which brought a lot of happiness to a lot of people.

“I join many others in appealing for Manannán Mac Lir return to his rightful place, where he can keep a watchful eye over the Foyle.”
