Sugden: £27m for Portrush is a '˜good news story'

East Londonderry MLA Claire Sugden has welcomed the news that Portrush is in line for £27 million from the government.

We revealed the news about the DSD funding today, which will come in two tranches - £17 million for projects to be completed before The Open, and a further £10 million to regenerate the harbour area in 2020.

Sugden said: “This is a good news story for the whole of the North Coast.

“This money was promised a year ago, and I have been lobbying the Executive since then to deliver it. I am pleased that they will now do this.

“The 2019 Open Championship will be the biggest event that Northern Ireland has ever hosted. It will bring incredible opportunities to showcase us as a home for large scale events. It will grow visitor numbers and boost our local and regional economies.

“I am glad that meaningful preparation can get under way for this global event. There will be substantial demand for accommodation across Northern Ireland. I am therefore pleased that one of two major projects is a new train station in Portrush. This will improve access for those travelling to the North Coast from other areas.

“Public realm works will also improve Portrush town centre. Along with its natural beauty, local cuisine and entertainment, this will help to create an all-round fantastic experience for visitors.

“This is a golden opportunity to stage an unforgettable event, one which will increase Northern Ireland’s presence internationally. I am delighted that work can now go ahead to ensure that this happens. I urge the Executive to work together to get preparations under way without delay.”
