Sugden calls for more connection with UUC

Independent councillor Claire Sugden says she wants to make a connection with the University of Ulster’s Coleraine campus.

The councillor, who replaced David McClarty MLA at the end of last year is a part time student herself at Jordanstown.

Speaking this week, the area’s youngest ever female councillor told The Times: “I really want to make a connection with the University.

“I will be meeting the Vice Chancellor in the coming weeks to introduce myself. I hope to find out how we as a community can make better use of our university.

Coleraine University provides so much to the area.

“Aside from education, it puts money into the local economy and provides jobs for local people,

“We have a first class facility there in the Riverside Theatre which caters for all ages and backgrounds. I think we sometimes forget how lucky we are here in Coleraine.”

Councillor Sugden went on: “I really want to champion Coleraine, and I think that the University can provide us with a real potential here not only to inspire our young people but to provide opportunities for local firms.”
