Sugden recognises local foster carers

Foster Care Fortnight runs until June 14th, with the theme of ‘Make a Connection to Fostering.’ This event highlights the vital contribution of Foster carers.

East Londonderry MLA Claire Sugden has highlighted the work carried out by local foster families.

She said: “In Northern Ireland, 2,857 children are currently in care; 76% by foster care families.

“I encourage widespread recognition for their work.

“There is always demand for Foster carers and I have been told that the Northern Trust currently needs emergency carers for short notice care.

“I was pleased to welcome the Chairperson of Kinship Care NI to present to my Assembly Committee for Employment and Learning last week. She spoke about the challenges of education and employment for Kinship Carers.

“These carers provide equally invaluable care through formal or informal arrangements within family networks. I have been asking for clarity around the provision that Kinship Carers receive to ensure that they are equally supported.

“As we look forward to the draft Adoption and Children Bill, to be released for consultation, it is my desire that Fostering, including Kinship Fostering, is fully recognised and supported through this Bill. I will continue to raise this within the Assembly.”
