Suicide isa top priority, says MLA

DUP MLA Gary Middleton says suicide prevention is a top priority following his appointment to the Stormont Health committee.

The Foyle MLA Middleton has been newly-appointed to the committee, replacing George Robinson MLA.

He’s also been appointed to the Finance Committee, replacing newly appointed Junior Minister Emma Pengelly MLA.

“I look forward to serving as a member of both the health and finance committees,” he said.

“There are many issues I want to pursue and raise, particularly in the area of health. The Foyle constituency continues to suffer with high levels of suicides and attempted suicides. There needs to be a particular focus on intervention and ensuring that there is help available for those who need it.

“I will continue to fight the case for greater and more efficient mental health services and will work with the Health Minister and committee colleagues to make this the case,” he added.
