Summer Music at Cathedral

As part of the ongoing Summer Music Series at St Columb’s Cathedral three talented young organists will give a recital tomorrow, Thursday at lunchtime.

Entitled ‘Young Organists’ Showcase’ the event will get underway at 1.10 pm, and will feature four young organists performing music by a range of composers in what will be a most interesting programme. Admission to the concert is free with entirely voluntary contributions, if wished, at the end.

Those taking part are: Nicky Morton and Louis Fields, who are joint holders of the Philip Mehaffey Memorial Organ Scholarship in the Cathedral, together with Ben McGonigle, a former holder of the Scholarship and who is Organist of Christ Church, Londonderry, and Eamonn McCrossan. Nicky, Louis and Ben are all members of the Cathedral Choir as well.

The four young organists will be playing works by Bach, Lang, Peeters and Liszt.

Dean of Derry, Dr William Morton, said: “I am delighted the Music Series in the Cathedral this summer is featuring these young musicians, aiding them in their musical development and promoting the pipe organ to such a high degree. I extend a very warm welcome and invitation to all.”
