Summer music series at St Columb’s Cathedral

THE Summer Music series in St Columb’s Cathedral gets underway tomorrow, Thursday, when one of the world’s most promising young musicians will be playing the Wells-Kennedy organ.

Joseph Ripka, who is presently the holder of a prestigious post in Connecticut in the USA, is including the Catahedral in his European tour having just performed in St Paul’s Cathedral, London and in several venues in the Republic of Ireland as well.

The winner of the Dublin International Organ Competition in 2008, Joseph has been described by the renowned English organist, Thomas Trotter, as “an impressive musician who plays with authority, enthusiasm and a sure sense of style. An excellent communicator, he was a worthy winner of that recent competition.”

Another influential writer in the world of the organ had this to write of Joseph: “Mr. Ripka is a superb musician and his artistry transcends the instrument. One is immediately aware that Mr. Ripka is a performer who is in control of all aspects his art. Mr. Ripka’s beautifully created phrase structure, inspired and appropriate registrations, and deep understanding of the all the compositions, gave life to his recital and delight to the audience. Joseph’s recital will begin on Thursday at 1.10 pm in St Columb’s Cathedral when he will be playing works by Cesar Franck, Augustin Barie, Marcel Dupre, Jehain Alain and Josef Rheinberger.

Admission to the recital is free of charge.
