Summer timetable at Carrickfergus visitor attractions

The Department for Communities has announced summer opening hours will commence from June 24 at two heritage sites in Carrickfergus.

The timetable, which will run until Sunday, September 17, takes effect at Carrickfergus Castle and Flame Gasworks museum.

Northern Ireland’s best Norman castle was besieged in turn by the Scots, Irish, English and French and played an important military role until 1928. One of the best preserved medieval structures in Ireland, it is open Monday to Saturday from 8.30am, and Sundays from 9.30am. Monday to Thursday the castle closes at 5pm however Friday to Sunday the closing time is 8pm. Admission charges apply.

Flame Gasworks is the island’s sole surviving coal gasworks and is one of the only three left in Great Britain and Ireland.

Opened in 1855, it supplied Carrickfergus with gas made from coal for over 100 years. Gas was produced until 1967 and the works closed in 1987.

Flame Gasworks will be open every day from 2pm to 5pm except Saturday. It is not open on Sundays in September.
