Sunny Roe Park

THE sun filled weekend at Roe Park proved to be a golf filled one as well, with the usual stableford competitions taking place on the Thursday and Saturday and the major Walworth Cup Competition running over two days for those of a particular vintage.

The Stableford format and the sunshine clearly suited Mervyn King as he completed the unusual feat of winning on both days! On the Thursday his fine 42 point total was enough to shade Frank Boyd on the break of tie, and Darren Mullan in third place with 41 points. Losing a shot to his handicap had little impact come the weekend when he recorded a 41 point tally, with again a strong back nine seeing him home in first place following another break of tie, this time with young James Callaghan in second place. Brian Cooper in third place saw himself lose another point off his handicap to a newly revised 14.

The Walworth Cup, played over the Friday and Saturday, was once again generously sponsored by Brian Brown and appreciated by all who took part.

A hung parliament of sorts was to follow as the first three competitors home all registered 40 points. Ronnie Millican again found himself among the prizes and took the first place plaudits with the wily old fox Derek Simpson in second and Donald Forrest in third.

The ‘Super’ seniors prize was claimed by Andy Dunne with 38 points. The front nine produced a strong showing from George Brien on 21 points, but Father Liam McClarey took the prize with the same tally. Joe Connor took the back nine prize again with a tally of 21 points.

Gerry Byrne took the prize for the par 3’s with a 12 point tally whilst the par 5’s prize was taken by Lawrence Mulgrew with 9 points.

Last weekend saw the Ulster Fourball team complete the second leg of their tie with Greencastle. Carrying forward a maximum 5-0 lead from the first leg it only required a half point for the team to progress. Steven Hamill and Neville Martin lead out first, but struggled going four down but eventually fought back to a tied position, though would have been relieved to have been called in when Red Hartin and Kevin Boyd secured the necessary half point. The team now progress to play either Fortwilliam of Gracehill in the third round. On Sunday of this weekend the Senior Cup squad attempted to qualify from the Hilton Templepatrick resort, though they failed to qualify among tough competition from within the same pool.
