Support aids recovery after cardiac trauma

The programme of story-telling, poetry, music and art was provided by Randal Stephen Hall, in McCaughey House at Whiteabbey Hospital.

Stephen was the first special guest for the East Antrim Cardiac Support Group, which was formed in September and meets on the first Tuesday of every month.

Martin Powderly, group secretary, said: ” While our group really is about having fun socially, we like to think we’re helping each other to recover together.

“After all, these can be pretty life changing and frightening experiences and we would welcome anyone who has endured similar circumstances to join our group,”

Belfast-born Stephen resides in Whitehead and was featured on several occasions on the late Gerry Anderson’s show and his satirical folk songs became a favourite on the presenter’s play list.

From his background in art and design and his interest in cultural identity, Stephen has produced an “enjoyable and humorous set” and has entertained audiences, throughout Northern Ireland.

Stephen had his audience enthralled with his anecdotes poems and folk songs that he had written, including the narrative built around a “diamond”, surrounded by myth and legend, apparently found at Cavehill that ended up in John Erskine’s hat shop in Belfast’s North Street in the late 19th century and is housed in Linenhall Library. The tale was illustrated with the aid of Stephen’s artistic drawings projected onto a big screen.
