Support for united landslide campaign

THE councils in Larne and Moyle are to lobby for urgent action to prevent potentially deadly landslides on the Coast Road.

After three rockfalls in a month at Garron Point, representatives in Moyle this week echoed their colleagues in Larne in seeking a united front in new talks with DRD Roads Service officials.

DUP Coast Road councillor Winston Fulton’s proposal at Smiley Buildings, reported last week, was taken up in Ballycastle on Monday by Glens Sinn Fein councillor, Oliver McMullan.

“The council supported my call for a joint approach with Larne Borough Council,” he said.

“This is an issue of the utmost importance to people living in both council areas because there are implications for emergency services, school buses and people trying to get to and from their work or to and from the port when the Coast Road is closed and this latest diversion has been in force since the turn of the year,” he said on Tuesday.

“We need to know what Roads Service intends to do to address the problem in the short term and in the longer term,” said Cllr McMullan, who has asked for a comprehensive geological survey.
