Support for victimsof domestic abuse

THE chair of a local partnership set up to tackle domestic violence in the North West has stressed that help is available for workers affected by abuse in the home.

Deirdre Mahon, the outgoing chair of the Western Domestic Violence Partnership (WDVP) has reaffirmed its commitment to a pledge aimed at enhancing coordination and links between statutory agencies and voluntary groups tackling domestic violence.

She said: “Domestic Violence is an issue that affects many people both in their home life and in the workplace. I have been privileged to lead a dedicated and professional team in the Western Domestic Violence Partnership and I firmly believe that the Pledge will go a long way in raising greater awareness of the issue.”

Aidan Gordon, incoming Partnership chair, added: “I am honoured to be taking over from Deirdre at a time of significant developments in the area of domestic violence.

“I am proud to reaffirm our commitment to the Pledge and I would like to thank Deirdre for all her efforts in leading the way on this initiative, which will lead to a greater awareness of the issue of domestic violence in the workplace.”

It is acknowledged that under-reporting of domestic violence incidents is an issue. On average the PSNI attend 60 domestic related incidents per day and it is maintained that many more cases go unreported. The Partnership collectively acknowledged this issue and gave a commitment to strengthen their support systems.
