Supporting local businesses in 2014

As we head into 2014 there is much to be hopeful for if all of the parties on Lisburn Council have the ambition to see it through.

Families, traders, business people and others across Lisburn and beyond have faced challenging times in the past year. I would like to see 2014 get easier for them.

Looking after financial and physical health is essential that’s why my principle priorities for the coming year will be around supporting local businesses to help create and sustain local employment and fighting for high level and accessible local healthcare. Lisburn Council has a role in providing practical support to local traders and retailers and I would like to see that work continue and expand.

One of the proactive schemes in the past year that was sponsored by the Council was one that supported younger people in getting work experience that will assist them in their future job searches. Local employers also benefited as they enjoyed the energy and enthusiasm of local young people.

Sustainable local jobs ensure that local people spend locally which has a positive knock on effect for local businesses and retailers.

As the year ends, there are serious questions over the future services at the Lagan Valley Hospital I want to continue to work with colleagues to do what we can to fight to keep those local services for local people. Supporting local people and services is what I came into politics to do and I am hopeful that the next year will bring good news for Lisburn.
