Supreme Court an ‘option’ - solicitor

Brendan McConville is serving a 25 year term and John Paul Wootton a minimum of 14 years prison for the Banbridge constable’s murder in Craigavon in 2009.

Since their convictions the duo have consistently protested their innocence.

Wootton’s solicitor, John Finucane, son of murdered solicitor Pat Finucane, told the audience at a West Belfast Feile event that there were issues over the prosecution’s evidence.

Mr Finucane was on a panel discussion at the festival and said that future options include taking the case to the Supreme Court and the Criminal Cases Review Commission.

“As someone who has had experience with campaigns, I think it’s very important.

“I think that never be put off by what political agenda or political muck up may be thrown at this campaign,” he said.

“A campaign will strengthen any legal avenue and I have seen that personally in relation to my father’s case.”

Dublin based TD Clare Daly, who attended the men’s appeal hearing also spoke at the event.

“I was going to say I am very happy to be here but obviously happy is the completely wrong word,” she said.

“I am actually boiling angry to be here having attended the appeal and listened to the evidence that was presented.

“I am glad to lend my support to the campaign and certainly to do what I can to secure justice for the Craigavon Two.”

During the event, chaired by independent Lisburn Councillor Angela Nelson, a video of Gerry Conlon, who died earlier this year, talking about the case was played to the audience.
