Surf’s up for Davy Boyle

Well, not Caring Caretaker Davy Boyle.

Non-swimmer Davy won the lesson as part of his prizes for being voted Coleraine Times Person to be Proud of so he decided to use the experience as a fundraiser for his chosen charities.

Thanks to the help of Ricky Martin of Alive Surf School, surfing lessons were offered for £25 with half the proceeds going to Caring Caretaker charities.

On Sunday afternoon, in glorious sunshine at the West Strand in Portrush, Davy took to the waves on his surfboard.

“I actually enjoyed it once I got in,“ said Davy.

“I was nervous because I can’t swim but now that I have done it, it was quite a buzz.

“I would like to thank everyone who voted for me in the Person to be Proud of competition because if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t have got the chance to try surfing and raise some more money.

“I have to thank Ricky Martin and the two girls from Alive Surf School for their help, Sgt Jonny Anderson from the PSNI for coming into the water and taking photographs and Sean McCarry from the Community Rescue Service.

“Also thanks to my family for their support and my grandson Oliver who took time out from celebrating being accepted into Coleraine Inst to go surfing with his grandad. Even George and Hudson, the dogs, took a dip!”

Raising over £300, Davy thanked everyone who took part in the surfing lessons, especially people who travelled from as far as Ballyclare to participate.

“Now that the surfing is over, I can really look forward to another one of my prizes - a hotel break in the Everglades,” laughed Davy.
