Surge in shoplifting

Police are urging business owners to be more vigilant following a number of recent incidents where people were detained on suspicion of theft.

Police made four arrests in connection with these offences and the stolen goods were recovered.

Area Commander Chief Inspector Jason Murphy said despite police success in apprehending these offenders, shop owners must not become complacent.

“It is in the interest of everyone that staff members are more alert to what is happening on the shop floor and to be on their guard against potential shoplifters,” he said.

“If you are apprehensive about anyone on your premises note down a brief but detailed description and keep an eye on the person until they leave the store or pay for their purchases. It is also worth alerting other businesses in the area to warn them about suspicious ‘customers’.”

Chief Inspector Murphy added: “Be proactive – don’t wait for the crime to occur. Get in touch with your local Crime Prevention Officer who can provide you information and update you on any crime initiatives in your area.

We can only be successful in tackling this issue if we have the participation and support of local businesses.”
