Suspected getaway car causes alert in Toomebridge

A SECURITY alert in Toomebridge ended on Monday evening after police took away items for examination from an abandoned car.

Homes were evacuated and roads were closed in Toomebridge, Co Antrim after the car was found abandoned on Sunday.

Residents were allowed to return to four homes while investigations continued.

The silver vauxhall was found on Sunday afternoon and is thought to be connected to an armed robbery that occurred on Main Street in Toome on Saturday night.

Two men, armed with a gun and a hammer, robbed a Bookmakers at about 5pm and made off with a sum of money. No one was injured in the incident.

The Gallagh Road was closed between its junctions with Carlane Road and Shore Road, the Shore Road was closed between Cargin Road and Toome.

The security alert at the Gallagh Road ended on Monday evening after a number of items were taken away from the scene for examination and the roads were reopened.
