Suspected hate crime motive behind bullet sent to Tobermore Primary School

Police confirmed that they are investigating a letter sent to the school on the Maghera Rd in the village.

The Mail understands that the bullet was sent as a warning over an elder sibling of a foreign national child at the school.

This elder sibling is believed to attend a Catholic school in the Mid Ulster area, and may have been seen in school uniform outside Tobermore primary.

The school has stated that no child was the subject of the threat.

DUP MLA for Mid Ulster, Ian McCrea expressed his revulsion.

“While I don’t know the full details at this point, it certainly appears that there is a racist or hate crime motive behind this,” he said.

“Whatever the motive is, it is absolutely unacceptable that any child should be involved or a primary school recieve a threat like this.

“As a parent myself, I am outraged that anyone would do something against or seek to target any innocent child.”

A PSNI spokeswoman said: “Police are aware of a letter sent to a primary school in Tobermore.

“While we do not discuss the security of individuals police, would never ignore anything that would put anyone at risk.

“Enquiries are continuing and anyone with any information that could assist police is asked to contact officers in Maghera on 0845 600 8000.”
