Suspended sentence for driving offence

A Lurgan man was given a suspended prison sentence last Wednesday at Craigavon Magistrates Court for driving while disqualified on October 1.

Thirty nine year old Ian John McCartney, Russell Drive, Lurgan, was sentenced for four months in custody, suspended for two years, and fined £100, with a £15 offender’s levy.

For driving without insurance he was sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for two years, and fined £100.

As well he was banned from driving for 18 months.

The court heard he was stopped while driving at Ardboe Drive and the case had been adjourned from a previous court for a pre-sentence report.

Mt Peter Murphy, representing the defendant, said McCartney was trying to sell the car and stupidly decided to drive it.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, said the defendant not only broke a court order telling him not to drive for a year but he also showed contempt for the order.

He added that he knew McCartney was trying to sell the car but he should have got someone to come and look at it or get someone who could legally drive to take it.
