Suspended sentence for man who assaulted nurses

A COLERAINE man has been given a suspended sentence after he was found guilty of aggravated assault on two female nurses at Causeway Hospital.

John Henry (38), of 50A Drumard Drive, was also found guilty of criminal damage, possessing an offensive weapon and disorderly behaviour during two separate incidents in May last year.

The court heard at approximately 6.45pm on May 12 a female nurse was assaulted in Medical One at the hospital by Mr Henry, who was a patient on the ward.

He then used a pole from a piece of equipment which he had dismantled to swing at staff and patients, before causing damage to a computer at the nurse’s station and throwing cups at staff.

When police arrived Mr Henry was in a calmer state, however the court was told that he appeared confused during interview.

Three days later police were called to the Accident and Emergency Department at the Causeway Hospital at 11.10pm. When they arrived they were told that Mr Henry had struck another female nurse in the chest. The accused later admitted to the assault but refused to sign his statement.

A solicitor said that Mr Henry, who has a problem with alcohol, was unwell at the time and was in an agitated condition. However once his medication was adjusted he was in a more controlled state and is full of remorse.

He added that his client undertook never to put himself in this position again and is seeking help with his alcohol problem.

District Judge, Richard Wilson, ordered Henry to pay 250 in compensation for the damage and sentenced him to three months imprisonment on each charge, to run concurrently, which was suspended for two years.

However he warned Henry that any similar behaviour or failure to pay his compensation and he would go straight to jail.
