Suspended teachers cost £585,600

THIRTY-SIX teachers have been suspended from posts in the Western Education and Library Board (WELB) over the past five years at a total cost of over half-a-million pounds.

The total costs amounting to 585,600 were incurred as a result of salaries, national insurance and pension contributions paid in respect of employees during their period of suspension.

Education Minister Caitrona Ruane revealed the details in response to a query at the Stormont Assembly.

Last year alone 13 teachers were suspended in WELB at a total cost of 189,823 - the highest number and cost in the whole of Northern Ireland.
