Suspended term fordecapitation threat

A Currynierin man who threatened to cut his own brother’s head off whilst he was armed with a machete earlier this year, has received a suspended sentence at Londonderry Magistrates’ Court.

Damien Hegarty, of Elm Close in Currynierin pleaded guilty to making a threat to kill, criminal damage and possession of a machete.

The charges relate to an incident in the Hazelbank area on the Westbank of the Londonderry back on January 12 if this year.

Londonderry Magistrates’ Court heard how officers of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) were called after the forty-one-year-old broke a car window and made a threat to his brother whilst armed with a machete.

Hegarty was arrested and during interview with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) he admitted he had had an argument with his brother on the night in question, Londonderry Magistrates Court heard.

He also admitted having the machete and “might have threatened to kill him but wouldn’t have carried it out,” Londonderry Magistrates’ Court was told.

The forty-one-year-old said that he only wanted to “frighten his brother,” the court heard.

Londonderry Magistrates’ Court heard that Hegarty has eight previous convictions but has not appeared before the court in almost 20 years.

District Judge Peter King suspended a four month sentence for 18 months over Hegarty.
