Sustrans award for pupils at Maghaberry Primary School

The School Mark is an award in recognition of the work of the school community to increase active travel to the school and within the school community.

The school Principal, Mr Graham Gault said that he was “very pleased to get this award and to see so many bikes in the lovely bike sheds and so many children being a bit more active on the journey to school, we have worked hard to get the Bronze Award and will now start on the Silver.”

Over the past couple of years pupils, their families and school staff have taken part in a number of active travel events from Bling your Bike and yourself to Bike Breakfasts, Big Pedal, Wheel and Walk to Santa, cycle skills and cycle training and the latest Balloon Challenge.

This latest encouraged pupils to walk, cycle, scoot or park and walk to school over four weeks. There was a one day class challenge to see which class had the most pupils coming to school in an active way on one day, the P2 class won the prize for this.

Pamela Grove-White from Sustrans added: “I’m so pleased to present the award to the school, they have been very active in promoting active travel and trying to reduce congestion outside the school and for pupils to have some exercise and fun on the journey to school. Pupils have helped to run events and helped the Active Travel champion, Mrs Aiken.”
