Swallowed a bag of drugs when police arrived at flat

When police went to search a flat in Craigavon a 36-year-old man swallowed a small bag which he later admitted contained '˜blow'.

Kieran James John McCann, Drumgor Heights, Craigavon, was fined £150 last Wednesday at the local magistrates’ court for obstructing a drugs search on May 5 last year.

He was also fined £300 for unlawful possession of a class B drug, cannabis, and ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy.

The court heard police went to a flat occupied by the defendant at Drumgor Heights to carry out, under warrant, a search for drugs and related items.

They saw him swallow a small bag containing a brown substance and he was cautioned for obstructing a search.

McCann told them there was more in a tin and police found a small brown block. He was arrested on suspicion of having cannabis.

During interview the defendant confirmed what he had swallowed was ‘blow’ and the amount in the tin was ‘a bit of blow’ for a joint.

A barrister representing McCann explained that his client had been the subject of a number of death threats.

He added that when McCann heard the police coming in he tried to escape through a window.

“His initial reaction was one of panic,” said the barrister.

He added that McCann’s last drugs offence was of some vintage.
