Swann welcomes former PM’s grandson to Stormont

Robin Swann, the North Antrim Ulster Unionist Party Assemblyman and member of the Stormont Culture and Agriculture Committees, formally welcomed Mr William Devas, the grandson of the late Captain Terence O’Neill to the UUP group meeting in his role as Party Chief Whip.

Assemblyman Swann, the North Antrim UUP Chairman, said Mr Devas’ visit was especially memorable to him personally as he now represented the Stormont constituency once held by his late grandfather.

Captain O’Neill had not only been Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, but also represented the Bannside area, which is now part of Assemblyman Swann’s North Antrim constituency.

Mr Swann said: “It was a great honour and personal privilege for me to formally welcome Mr Devas to the UUP Group meeting given his late grandfather’s close links, not just to Stormont itself, but also to my home North Antrim region.

“Capt O’Neill was a politician ahead of his time. It could be suggested the real foundations of the current peace process were laid in the late 1960s by Capt O’Neill’s visionary Unionism when he was Northern Ireland Prime Minister,” said Assemblyman Swann.
