Swans cause power cuts

RESIDENTS of Bannfoot were left in the dark by swans in 1969.

The were complaining to the Electricity Board about power failures in the area.

One resident said that so far that winter his lights had suddenly gone out twice due to swans hitting the cables over the River Bann.

He added: “This happens every year and we are getting fed up with it.

“It can be especially annoying when you are in the middle of a TV programme and everything goes black.

“What happens is that swans flying at night down the course of the river towards the lough cannot see the wires to avoid them.

“Further along the river I understand similar cables are covered with some sort of material which is fluorescent and the swans can see these.”
