Sweet Charity visits Big Apple

Lisnagarvey Operatic Society is putting the finishing touches to its latest production, Sweet Charity, and the cast are eagerly looking forward to the curtain going up next week.

Sweet Charity tells the tale of the most optimistic girl in the world who, despite evidence to the contrary, is determined not to give up on finding her one true love.

Based in the Big Apple, Charity sings and dances her way through the ups and, lets be honest mainly downs, of romantic life in the city that never sleeps.

Lauren Molloy will step into Charity’s dancing shoes and she recently got a taste of Charity’s stomping ground when she visited New York to see for herself the background to Charity’s sweet story.

After visiting hot spots such as Central Park and Time’s Square. Lauren hopes to use her travels to add to the portrayal of her role having experienced the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple first hand.

One of Charity’s love interests, Oscar Lindquist, is being played by local lad, Rea Campbell, who is making a welcome return to the stage with Lisnagarvey, hot off the heels of filming the latest blockbuster with some of Hollywood’s top stars.

“I am delighted to be back with the company,” said Rea, who has been combining rehearsing with Garvey to filming a new TV show, which is being kept strictly under wraps for now. “Oscar is the very shy, claustrophobic and nervy leading man and love interest of Charity. I don’t want to spoil anything for the audience but Oscar is certainly no regular on the dating scene and his relationship with Charity can at the best of times be awkwardly amusing.

“The most rewarding bit of it all has been working with my leading lady. Lauren and I have worked tirelessly on dialogue with the wonderful director Wilfie Pyper to ensure that we capture the tenderness of our character’s relationship and journey.”

Sweet Charity features a fabulous score, including the classic songs Big Spender, Rhythm Of Life, and If My Friends Could See Me Now, This comical but tender show is not to be missed.

The curtain will go up on the show Tuesday April 12 and will run until Saturday April 16. Tickets are on sale from the Box Office on 02892 509254 or online at www.laganvalleyisland.co.uk.
