Swimmer smashes two Ulster records

A BALLYMONEY swimmer has smashed not one but two Ulster records.

25-year-old Nick Browne, from the Finvoy Road area of the town, also picked up two gold medals and two silver medals whilst competing at the Celtic Masters in Dublin.

The golds came in the freestyle frontcrawl at 50 metres and 100 metres and the silvers were in the breaststroke during the event at the National Aquatic Centre which attracted the best swimmers from across the island.

Nick’s 50 metre breaststroke Longcourse Ulster record time was 34.79 seconds and in the 100 metres it was one minute 18.73 seconds which beat times of 37.19 for the 50m Longcourse and one min 22.35 secs held by Richard Murray (Belfast Masters) since March 7, 2005.

Nick, who is a member of Ballymoney Swimming Club where he is also a coach, has been swimming since a young age and he was delighted with his success.

He told the Times: “I was in the 25 to 29 years old group and there were around ten competitors. I was pleased with my medals because I had not been in heavy training and I was surprised.

“It has given me a boost to keep training and aim for the European and World Masters. The Celtic Masters was a very well run event and some of those taking part said the relaxed atmosphere helped them to put in good times.”
