Sympathy extended to Polish community

THE Mayor of Londonderry has extended his condolences to the local Polish community on the tragic death of their President Lech Kaczynski and other senior public officials, in an air crash at the weekend.

The Mayor was speaking following a Vigil that was held in the city centre on Sunday night.

President Kaczynski and 96 others were killed in the air disaster as it approached Smolensk airport in thick fog early on Saturday morning.

A Book of Condolence has been set up in the Guildhall for members of the public to sign. The Book of Condolence will be open from 9am to 5pm until after the funerals later this week.

The Mayor said his thoughts and prayers are with the local Polish community at this time.

"It is a deeply sad time for the Polish community. This tragedy has shocked the entire community and united everyone in grief. Our sympathies are with the people of Poland and the Polish communities here in Derry and the wider North West region.

"I would encourage everyone to rally around the Polish community at this time as they grieve for their President and the other 95 people who were killed in this air disaster," he commented.
